In an era of Death Stars, alien invasions, fighting polar bears and wizards, this world has seen a lot of “special effects.” I use the term loosely because it’s not so special when my brother can pull off the same imagery on his mac book.
My point is, everything that is fake looks real now. Long gone are the days where the pesky black outline distracts us from what is really happening on screen. Soon kids are going to be more afraid of monsters because the monsters they see on TV and in the movies are the closest things to being real.
In the midst of this “special effects” take-over, it is refreshing to see a movie that is special, not in effects, but in practice.
What do you call a man who becomes polarized in an attempt to sabotage the city’s power plant? Special.
Let’s take this one step further and say this polarized man enjoys hanging out in a video store, but, the video store is just that-videos. The term “DVD” is non-existent and possibly the most recent release they own is Lord of the Rings. Special.
Let’s take some more steps and one big step to where the polarized man comes into the store and erases all the VHS tapes. REALLY special.
And then, oh yes, the absolute unthinkable thing to do to a movie: Have the two stars recreate the entire video library that was erased. Not just special. Spectacular.
And that synopsis is what we call the genius movie, Be Kind Rewind.
So far the movie has gotten poor reviews. Understood. Who wants to see something that their teenage kid could recreate in the backyard? I’ll tell you who. Me.
I’m sick of all these over-the-top movies trying to out-do one another. No, I haven’t seen Lord of the Golden Potter. Want to know why? Because they all look the same to me. I can’t keep the Hobbits, Voldemorts and Mr. Tummus’ straight.
“But, oh, Lindsay,” you may say, “they have so much depth.”
The depth in those movies are about as deep as my piss in a Burger King cup. If you think fighting animals, people and…things…are deep, get out of bizarro world and join me in the real world-where it is possible for a person to become polarized by a sabotage attempt against a power plant. That’s deep.
Now is the part where I say “go see this movie, young and old viewers alike!” There, I said it. Because you may be prepared to gather your overly-macho buddies together in an attempt to save Sparta, fail miserably, but know that your death was not in vain. But, will you be prepared to rewrite the cinematic classics of our time? I don’t think you will be able to.
